English:
Fractions is considered one of the most challenging themes within mathematics during primary school. The topic of this paper deals with the misconceptions about fractions that exist in 6th grade. It is important that teachers are capable of identifying their pupils’ misconceptions at an early stage, so they can be corrected. I have used a qualitative method by interviewing six pupils in 6th grade, to answer the thesis question. The interview guide consists of several diagnostic tasks, designed to identify the pupils’ misconceptions.
The study reveals that the most common misconceptions about fractions exist among the pupils. The study indicates that the pupils lack a basic understanding when it comes to the size of the fractions, and to see the fractions as a whole unit. The lack of understanding could be a result of the pupils studying and learning the rules without knowing why, and that can lead to misconceptions. A greater focus on fundamental conceptual understanding is essential to gradually expand the pupils’ knowledge about fractions.
