Our thesis examines the collaboration between administrative and academic staff at universities and colleges in Norway. We have carried out a descriptive, quantitative crosssectional survey which attempts to contribute to a better understanding of how the experience of collaboration is between the administrative and academic staff.
The purpose of the thesis is to answer the following question: How do administrative and academic staff at universities and colleges (UH-sector) experience the collaboration between the two groups, and is there a difference in their experience?
We tried to answer this question using a survey that we sent out to three state educational institutions. Our theoretical framework consists of organizational theory, psychology in organizations and the dynamics between professions, as well as their relation to other occupational groups.
We also used secondary data from the Database for Statistics on Higher Education, which shows that the administration has undergone a major change over the past 22 years. There is a big change in the use of job titles and the composition of formal skills in administrative positions during this period.
Our findings show that there is a co-variation between collaboration and division of labor among the academic staff in our survey, but not among the administrative staff. Our findings also show that the administrative and academic staff partly lack a shared understanding of the division of labor at their workplace.
We also found that there is a co-variation between collaboration and job satisfaction for both the administrative and academic staff, but that the co-variation is strongest for the administrative staff.
