Engelsk sammendrag (abstract): In this master thesis I have worked with a case-study of the Constitution of Norway as it was written in 1814. My main focus in this work has been to investigate and find out more about how and why the Constitution became such a liberal Constitution. The fact that it was liberal, is becoming very obvious when we compare it with other countries in Europe that also got their new written constitutions in the period between 1750 and 1850. The main issue in this work has been to look more closely into the voting rights issue and find out how Norway could give itself a new Constitution with very liberal voting rights. These rights were given to the farmers who owned their own land and farms. These decisions helped to give Norway an outstanding and very liberal Constitution in its time. From this starting point, I have been working to find out if the explanations for this fact can be found in the history of the political system, and the Norwegian traditions in general and also as a part of a longstanding union of Denmark-Norway. How that can this help explain the voting rights? I have been following two different paths in this work concerning the radical and liberal voting rights in the Constitution. The first path is pointing in the direction of the long tradition that was lasting for centuries in the Norwegian political system, a tradition that also gave people in the rural areas the rights to carry out their own political decision-makings. In this system, the farmers, first and for most the wealthiest farmers, but also the congregation of the farmers who were living there, had the opportunity to act i the political system and make decisions. While working with this path, I have looked more closely in to how the political system was constructed in Norway the last years leading up to the years of 1814. In particular I have been looking into the communication and the interaction between the local community and the central government, and how the local community was acting to solve different kind of political cases and questions at the level of the local community. The second path is pointing back to the influence from the enlightenment and its new breaking ideas of political freedom, democracy and the separation of the political powers. While working with these questions, I have been looking into the work of political philosophers such as John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I have studied political norms and values and tried to find out more about how this new ideas could be spread from one country to another and which mechanisms that are making that happen. Finally, I have made an evaluation of what kind of information I have found during this work, which can reveal more about how things resulted in the Constitutions paragraphs concerning the rights to vote.En
