Engelsk sammendrag (abstract) This thesis aims to thematize and problematize the body in mental health care. Through discourse analysis, it seeks to investigate what discourses about body and health which are prevalent in work on mental health care and how they are materialised in practical health care and life. A discourse analysis is a qualitative, post-modern approach aiming to grasp language and reality. How we make sense of the body is linked with how we understand health, and vice versa. Understanding constitutes and is being constituted by the content of health services. In discourse analysis, the research question is the actual discourse even though I am proposing a specific research question in order to direct the analysis towards a certain focus; What discourses about body and health are prevalent and materialised in mental health care? The theory section of the thesis limits the discourse with the construction of two idealtypes of the body drawing on Weber’s idealtypemodel as a tool for analysis. I have chosen existing work that, in my opinion, can be considered fundamental in practical mental health care. I have analysed dominant and invisible discourses. With regards to research method, it departs from Neumann’s descriptions based on the work of Foucault, but also includes Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of discourse. As a specialist in Norwegian psychomotor physiotherapy and a researcher, I define myself as a participant in the discourse. The thesis aims to problematize body and health in the field of mental health care and intends to produce material suitable for consideration. Additionally, it aims to raise questions rather than seek answers, solutions or absolute truths. In selected existing work, I discover an unthematized body. It seems to be an understanding with clear distinctions between physical and mental healthcare and rather little thematizing of the body as a source of experience, coping and change and as a carrier of somatic illness as a risk factor and as connected with mental unhealth. Can a different understanding of the body, described by the metaphor the sustainable body, fit into preventive, health-promoting and practical mental healthcare? Understanding the body as lived, as described by Merleau-Ponty, is to assume the body as the center of all experiences and defines all relations as corporal. Such an understanding can contribute to the images of health and somatic and mental illness as intertwined and always corporal.en
