Engelsk sammendrag (abstract): Background: This study resulted from curiosity about how rapid change and growth in a local community affects residents' mental health. Ullensaker is a municipality that, in a very short time, has developed from rural to an urbanized society. Mental health services have experienced a sharp increase in inquiries. Purpose: 1. To investigate whether living in a local community experiencing fast and pervasive change and growth, such as Ullensaker, affects the population's mental health and the need for health care. 2. To decide how such a society can handle the situation in order to create protective safeguards. Materials and methods: The study is based on a qualitative method inspired from hermeneutic and phenomenology. Data-collection was made by semi-structured, individual interviews with 10 professionals in various service areas. The data-analysis resulted in qualitative main- and sub-categories, which were related to previous research and theory on mental health and community, social capital, sense of coherence, the modern society, and anomy. The discussion focuses on how social capital and sense of coherence is affected by the rapid growth and changes in society, what the consequences might be for inhabitant's mental health, and how to create protective safeguards. Results and conclusion: The results shows that the rapid growth and changes can lead to poor mental health in the population. In particular, the most vulnerable are exposed. Both social capital and sense of coherence are in danger of being reduced. Identity and social networks are highlighted as essential for good mental health. However the results indicate that social capital alone is not enough. individual and physical factors play a significant role. Less serious mental disorders (anxiety and depression) are most susceptible to changes in the environment. On the other hand, many of the inhabitants tolerate and even enjoy the changes. It is uncertain whether the length of time lived in the local community had an effect on mental health. Identity-building, networking, meaningful activities, and good public services are essential protective factors. Health promotion requires continuous monitoring and planning.
