English: This study is based on the evaluation process conducted after finalising an interdisciplinary higher education programme in mental health in Utena, Lithuania. The programme has been a three-year part-time study corresponding to the workload of a full academic year 60 ECTS. The training was conducted by Hedmark University College in cooperation with Hedmark County during 2003- 2005. The main purposes of the educational programme were to build the competence related to interdisciplinary cooperation, ethics, communication and special social psychiatric problems, as well as building democracy. The design of the evaluation process is based on Vedung’s model of successful goal achievement. All of the 14 students that completed the training gave their comments in a questionnaire consisting of closed and open questions. The findings from the questionnaire were discussed with relation to the theoretical reference frames in accordance with the report from the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision about competence in mental health. The quantitative data shows a high level of goal achievement. The qualitative data describe which factors in the training program contributed to the goal achievement. The findings show that the content of the study was in accordance with the students’ expectations. A strengthening of the competence of interdisciplinary cooperation was considered as something new and highly relevant. The findings also show that the training resulted in a change of the moral, relational and professional attitudes generally expressed when dealing with people suffering from socio- psychiatric problems. The informants express that it was extremely important that the training was translated into Lithuanian. Participation and information sharing throughout the project led to an increased understanding of democratic processes. The students recommend that the training should be offered again in Lithuania, but emphasise that it would be recommendable to include practical training in the project.
