English: Increased cooperation between university colleges and the kindergartens where students have their teaching placements is vital to keeping pre-school teacher training up-to-date. An important arena for this sort of cooperation consists of ‘practice meetings’ in which students, tutors and college lecturers in pedagogics meet to discuss the students’ experience of day-to-day activities in the kindergarten as documented in practice narratives. Hedmark University College is one of eight institutions to have taken part in a national project dealing with the role of practice in teacher education. In connection with this national project three pedagogics lecturers in the college have investigated the content of practice meetings and relations between the participants in them. The goal of this research and development project was to facilitate and carry out practice meetings which encourage equality between the various participants. The content was based on narratives from the practice arena. By using a particular template for analysis, practice narratives can allow for different perspectives which may promote a common understanding and increased learning. We have investigated whether the form and content we have chosen for the meetings can play a role in strengthening the professional competence of the participants. In this report we give an account of our theoretical approach and of the way we have conducted our investigation. In particular, we have made a detailed study of the roles played by the various participants and of power relations between them. In addition, we have evaluated the use of practice narratives as a form of pedagogical evidence and a starting point for discussion. We have also looked at various aspects of the participants’ competence with respect to learning and development. The results of our investigation do not point in the direction of universally valid answers and solutions. However, our evaluations during the course of the project have led to our making some changes to both the form and content of the practice meetings. One result is that we have become more conscious of our own role in the meetings, of our own competence and how we can extend this further. We would like to further explore this aspect in the next phase of the development project. We have also become more aware of the possibilities afforded by seeing teaching practice as a more integrated part of teacher education. We hope this report can contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve the quality of teacher education.
