Norsk: I desember 2008 vedtok Stortinget ny formålsparagraf for grunnskolen. Verdiens pressede stilling fordrer refleksjon over solidaritetstankens plass i skolens verdigrunnlag.
English: In December 2008 the Norwegian Parliament passed a law setting out the aims of the compulsory school. This law stated that «education shall build on the basic values of Christian and humanist traditions, such as respect for human dignity and nature, freedom of thought, caring for others, forgiveness, equality and solidarity.» (Department of Education, 2008). The Norwegian authorities have thereby given normative guidelines as to what values should be the basis for activity in the Norwegian school system, and solidarity is one of these values. But if the actual values that characterise Norwegian society were to be the basis for the school’s values, it is doubtful whether solidarity would be included. There is little doubt that the idea of solidarity is under pressure in Europe today, a fact which should give cause for reflection about the place of solidarity in the school’s values. The initiative to this project was taken by teacher educators Harald N. Løken and Ingebjørg Stubø at Hedmark University College, Norway. Other participants in the project were primary school teachers Anita Andersen and Kjersti Ree Skrefsrud at Prestrud School and student teachers Dag Martin Grambo and Gry Sæther. Work on the project started in the winter of 2009 and was completed in the spring of 2011. The participants wished to reflect on the notion of solidarity as a value in the school system. Therefore they chose to concentrate on a wider theme area and not a limited topic area. The contributions in this report do not attempt to answer one specific question, but seek to throw light on a larger theme – solidarity as a basic value in the compulsory school – from different points of view.
