A 3- to 5-year cycle of vole abundances is a characteristic phenomenon in boreal and arctic Fennoscandia, and is well described for several species. Several hypothesis have been published on the causes of these cycles, reaching no consensus. There seem to be some agreement that several factors working simultaneously, is needed to drive the cyclicity in vole populations. One population of tundra voles Microtus oeconomus, and one population of bank voles Myodes glareolus was monitored on a monthly basic from may 2018 through April 2019. Comparing population size and survival between the two species, I will try to give an answer if tundra voles and bank voles are synchronized in the in the decline phase of the cycle. I tested the hypothesis that competition in the increase phase, combined with increasing predation, drives vole-populations through the crash phase and in to the low phase of the cycle. I test a prediction to the hypothesis: The tundra vole population will crash before the bank vole population. Both populations experienced a considerable decline in both population size and survival. The tundra vole population reached the low phase three months prior to the bank vole population. This support the hypothesis that the combined effects of competition and predation drives the cyclicity in vole populations. During the increase phase, shortage of food affects reproduction negatively, whilst increased mortality in the crash face is due to predation.en_US
