Abstract: In spring 2020 the Sustainable Development Goals Library (SDG Library) was launched as a new literature promotion project in Norway, with schools and public libraries as its main target groups. As a Norwegian version of the UN’s SDG Book Club, the SDG Library aims to provide children aged six to twelve years old with a literary approach to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Accordingly, the SDG Library is made up of 17 curated book lists, presenting in total 85 original children’s book titles, with corresponding activity materials. This article asks which understandings of children’s literature and reading are promoted in the SDG Library through the book lists and the texts that frame and present them. The study is theoretically inspired by Aleida Assmann’s (2008, 2011) perspectives on the functions of the literary canon and by Gérard Genette’s (1997) notion of paratexts. By analysing the selection of children’s book titles in the book lists and the library’s paratexts, the study finds that the SDG Library carries certain conceptions of what children’s literature is, and what it is supposed to do. Following from this, the article argues the importance of studying such conceptions, which often surround literature for children, as they may shape children’s and adults’ understandings of what children’s literature and reading are.en_US
