Rødrevens (Vulpes vulpes) kondisjon : et studie av faktorer som kan påvirke kondisjonen til rødreven i Hedmark

Abstract

Rødreven (Vulpes vulpes) er en mellomstor predator og nøkkelart i den boreale barskogen, med stor innvirkning på andre arter i form av predasjon. Økt innsikt i dette samspillet har ført til større interesse og krav om kunnskap i forhold til forvaltning av rødrev. En opportunist som rødreven utnytter det leveområdet har å by på. Økt tilgang på næring har vært et viktig grunnlag for rødrevens utbredelse og økende bestand. God tilgang på kadaver og slakteavfall fra jakt gjennom høst og vinter kan ha bidratt til å sikre viktig næring gjennom den harde vinteren i Norge. Spesielt i snørike vintre, som gjør det vanskelig for rødreven å jakte på smågnagere. Kondisjon er et mål på hvor god næringstilgangen er for rødreven i form av fettreserver. God kondisjon er avgjørende for reproduksjonssuksess. Dermed har jeg valgt å fokusere på hvilke faktorer som kan avgjøre kondisjonen til rødreven.

Jeg har sett nærmere på om åtejakt gir utslag på kondisjonen. Det viste seg at rødrev som er skutt på åte er i bedre kondisjon enn de som er felt under andre jaktformer. Dette kan tyde på at åte er viktig vinterføde, når annen næring er vanskelig å finne. Rødreven trives i kulturlandskapet og kondisjon øker i takt med økende andel landbruk i kommunen. Grunnen til dette er nok en kombinasjon av god tilgang til avfall fra mennesker og rødrevens utnyttelse av kulturlandskapet som jaktmarker. Å se nærmere på kondisjonen har gitt et innblikk i hvordan næringstilgangen forandrer seg gjennom jaktsesongen. Det ser ut til at rødreven lagrer næring i form av kroppsfett utover høsten, som den tærer på gjennom vinteren.

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a medium-sized predator and a key species in the boreal forest, with a great impact on other species in form of predation. A better understanding of this interaction has led to increased interest and demand for more knowledge in relation to the management of the red fox. An opportunistic animal like the red fox, exploits what the habitat has to offer. The increase in food availability has been an important basis for red fox distribution and population growth. Increased availability of carcasses and offal form hunting, through the fall and winter has helped to secure vital nutrient through the harsh winter in Norway. Especially in winters with a large amount of snow, making it difficult for the red fox to hunt rodents. The availability of food resources can be measured as fitness of the red fox, in the form of fat reserves. Good fitness is crucial for reproductive success. In this study I focused on the factors that may determine the condition of the red fox. I've looked at how bait hunting will impact the fitness of red fox. It turned out that the red fox shot at bait sites show a significantly better condition than those shot during other hunting methods. This suggests that bait is important in the fox’s winter diet, when other food is hard to find. Red fox thrives in landscape with human impact and the fitness increases with increasing proportion of agriculture in the municipality. The reason for this is probably a combination of available waste from humans and the foxes exploitation of the cultural landscape as hunting grounds. The condition of the red fox has given an insight to how food availability changes throughout the hunting season. It appears that the red fox store food in the form of body fat in the autumn, and deplete the fat reserve through the winter.
