Trommer i moderne metal

Abstract

I denne bacheloroppgaven redegjøres det for den lange og kompliserte trommeproduksjonsprosessen i sjangeren moderne metal til produksjonen The Institution av bandet Vigil. Oppgaven innledes av en teoretisk del hvor det kommer frem relevante teorier og metoder til trommeproduksjonsprosessen. Disse teoriene og metodene omhandler blant annet hva moderne metal-trommelyd er, hvilke bidragene faktorer som utgjør en god trommelyd, hva en god trommeslager i en slik sammenheng er og grunnleggende teori om trommer og trommestemming. I tillegg kommer det frem hvilke lydmessige kvaliteter vi leter etter i hvert enkelt trommeelement før trommeopptakene starter. Her kommer det også frem relevant teori om opptaksutstyr og deres relevante bruksområder. Videre følger en gjennomgang av den praktiske utførelsen av denne oppgaven, hvor hvert enkel steg i prosessen er illustrert med et lydspor på den vedlagte DVD-en. Det er i alt fire spor på DVD-en. De forskjellige stegene er 1. Opptak i studio – råopptak, 2. Postproduksjon, 3. Mix og 4. Resultatet – Trommer i kontekst. Hvert steg er i tillegg formidlet med et eget kapittel hvor alle praktiske fremgangsmetoder og teoretiske valg er illustrert. Til slutt følger en avsluttende del hvor oppgaven drøftes, konkluderes og avsluttes.

In this bachelor assignment, there is an account of the long and complicated process of recording and producing drums in the modern metal genre, to the production The Institution by the band «Vigil». The assignment starts of with a theoretical part where relevant theories and methods are presented. These theories and methods include what modern metal-drum sound is, what the contributing factors to good drum sound is, what a good drummer in this context is, and basic theory about drums and drum tuning. In addition we will present what sonic qualities we look for in each drum-element before the recording starts. After this there will also be presented relevant theory about the recording equipment and their relevant applications. Furthermore, what follows is a review of the practical execution of this task, where each single step in the process is illustrated on the enclosed DVD. There are a total of four tracks on the DVD. The various steps are: 1. Recording in the studio – raw sound, 2. Post production, 3. Mix and 4. The result - drums in context. In addition each steps is communicated by a separate section where all practical progress, methods and theoretical choices are illustrated. Finally there is a final part, where the assignment is discussed, concluded and ended
