Innsamlede Twitter innlegg,
Fan-aktivisme har eksistert over lengre
deltagende? | |
dc.description.abstract | The digital society today is evolving rapidly, with new media technologies bringing new features
that encourage previously more passive consumers to participate more actively through social
platforms. The fan culture, which is known as one of the groups to quickly embrace the new
technologies, is becoming increasingly participatory, where their activism brings more influence
through social media than before. This master's thesis, therefore, aims to investigate how fan
culture uses social media, mainly Twitter, as a communication channel for their opinions and
wishes, and what impact this may have on media producers, end products, and the fandom. The
thesis is a fan study with the aim of examining the change in how participatory culture has
developed, transformed, and become more common. The influence of fans around a franchise is not a
new concept, but due to the steady development of media technology, the definition and
consequences of fans' influence may have changed. The thesis will be based on two case studies,
where two recent and different research units around fan activism and grassroots circulations will
be analyzed and compared. Collected Twitter posts, material from public blogs, news articles, and
fan-centered forums will be the main sources of relevant data for the thesis, based on previous
theories from Henry Jenkins.
The first case deals with the fan-created viral campaign, which appeared around the feature film
about the famous Sonic the Hedgehog, which lasted from 2019 to 2020. The second case will
address fan activism around the Netflix series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, which ran from
2016 to 2018. Furthermore, the thesis will examine the significance of fans and the fandom
around the two different franchises and discuss and reflect on what negative and positive
consequences the fans' wishes and opinions can cause. Fan activism has been around for a long
time, but how does this 'trend' continue to develop in an increasingly participatory digital
society? | |
