Abstract

Sammendrag

I denne masteroppgaven undersøker jeg hva fosterforeldre og kulturformidlere forteller om sine erfaringer og vurderinger fra kulturformidlingsprosjektet som ble iverksatt av Stiftelsen Fyrlykta. Hensikten med kulturformidlingsprosjektet var å bistå barneverntjenester og fosterforeldre med å ivareta barnets etniske, kulturelle, språklige og religiøse identitet i henhold til FNs barnekonvensjon artikkel 30.

Min problemstilling er: «Hvilke erfaringer og vurderinger har fosterforeldre og kulturformidlere av prosjektet kulturformidling, for å opprettholde fosterbarn med etnisk minoritetsbakgrunn sin kulturelle bakgrunn og identitet?» Jeg benyttet meg av følgende forskningsspørsmål for å belyse min problemstilling: På hvilke måte beskriver fosterforeldrene og kulturformidlerne sine erfaringer og vurderinger av kulturformidlingsprosjektet? På hvilke måte kan kulturformidling bidra til å styrke barnets kulturelle bakgrunn og identitet? Hva kan være utfordringene på kort og lang sikt med tanke på minoritetsbarnets kulturelle oppfølgning?

I denne oppgaven har jeg anvendt kvalitativ tilnærming. Min problemstilling og forskningsspørsmål er knyttet til fosterforeldrenes og kulturformidlernes erfaringer og vurderinger. Det er dette som ligger til grunn for at jeg har valgt en kvalitativ forskningsstrategi med fenomenologisk og hermeneutisk tilnærming. Datamaterialet består av seks kvalitative individuelle forskningsintervju av fire fosterforeldre og to kulturformidlere. Jeg har valgt å benytte meg av tematisk analyse hvor det ble lagd sentrale kategorier knyttet opp mot problemstillingen og forskningsspørsmålene, som drøftes i oppgaven.

Resultatene og hovedfunn i studien viser at fosterforeldrene og kulturformidlerne formidlet at kulturformidlingsprosjektet har vært et positivt tiltak, men at det har kun vært i en tidsbegrenset periode for å kunne ivareta og opprettholde barna sin kulturelle bakgrunn og identitet. Deltakerne i studien formidlet at det har vært positivt at Stiftelsen Fyrlykta og barneverntjenesten har samarbeidet om kulturformidlingen, men at det er behov for mer veiledning og opplæring for å ivareta og opprettholde barnas kulturellebakgrunn over tid.

Summary

In my master assignment I have examined what fosterparents and cultural mediators tell about their experiences regarding the cultural mediation project carried out by «Stiftelsen Fyrlykta». The intention of the cultural mediation project was to assist the child welfare and fosterparents in prevailing the child`s ethnic, cultural, language- and religious identity according to UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 30.

My topic/research question is:» What experiences do fosterparents and cultural mediators have from the project of cultural mediation, in order to take care of the cultural background and identity of the foster children from ethnic minorities?»

I have used the following thesis questions to illustrate my topic: In which ways do fosterparents and mediators of culture describe their experiences when it comes to the cultural mediation project? How can mediation of culture contribute in strengthening the child`s cultural background and identity? Which challenenges will arise, in the short run and in the long run, regarding the minority-child`s cultural development?

In my assignment I have applied a qualitative approach. My topic and thesis questions are related to the fosterparents` and cultural mediators` experiences. This is the reason why I have chosen a qualitative reseach strategy with a phenomenologal and hermeneutical method. The data consists of six qualitative individual interviews of four fosterparents and two mediators of culture. I have chosen to apply a thematic analysis, involving essential categories regarding the topic and the thesis questions discussed in my assignment.

The results and main findings in my study show that the fosterparents and mediators of culture consider the cultural mediation project a positive initiative, however it has had too limited duration in order to take care of and maintain the children`s cultural background and identity. The participants in the study replied that the cooperation between Stiftelsen Fyrlykta and the child welfare when it comes to mediation of culture has been good. However, more guidance and training are necessary to be able to take care of and maintain the children`s cultural background and identity in a long term.
