Exploring ambient noise levels, cortisol changes, place attachment and restorative experiences in a suburban beach park/ Fra støy til stedsfølelse: Utforsking av lydnivå, kortisolforandringer, stedstilknytning og restituerende opplevelser i en urban strandpark. Jeg har skrevet oppgaven på både norsk og engelsk.

Abstract

Denne oppgaven kombinerer det teoretiske rammeverket fra miljøpsykologi med akustikk, for å studere forholdet mellom lydnivåer fra en trafikkert vei og restitusjon i en urban strandpark. Det ble gjennomført en kvasi-eksperimentell studie som kombinerte subjektive mål av intervjuer, Perceived Stress Scale, Restoration Outcome Scale, Ego Restoration Scale, opplevd støy og stedstilknytning, med objektive målinger av støytest, saliva kortisoltester, trafikktelling og værmonitorering. I tillegg ble det utviklet to skalaer for opplevd støy og stedstilknytning. Målet med eksperimentet var å undersøke relasjonen mellom områdestøy og restitusjon i et urbant grøntområde. Studien fant sted i en urban strandpark i Åsgårdstrand, Vestfold. Eksklusjonskriterium var alle individ under 18 år, og individ med medisinske tilstander som gjør at deltakeren ikke kan skille ut saliva eller produsere kortisol. Det er et viktig prinsipp for dette studiet at uteområder og urbane strandparker er for alle; derfor vil det ikke være naturlig å ekskludere noen fra spørreskjemaene på annet grunnlag enn at personen ikke kan oppholde seg i strandparken. Totalt deltok 136 deltakere, inkludert 28 deltakere oppfylte inklusjonskriteriene for saliva kortisoltester og intervjuer. Studien fant en sammenheng mellom opplevd støy, rekreasjon og stedstilknytning. Funnene tyder på at det videre er nødvendig å undersøke sammenhengen mellom støynivå og opplevd støy, samt kombinasjonen av subjektive og objektive målinger. Konkluderende, så vidt vi vet, er den nåværende oppgaven den første som tester denne problemstillingen opp mot både subjektive og objektive data.

The present thesis combined the theoretical framework and measurements from environmental psychology and acoustics, to study the relationship between ambient sound levels and restorative outcomes, in a suburban beach park. A quasi-experimental study was carried out which combined subjective measures of interviews, Perceived Stress Scale, Restoration Outcome Scale, Ego Restoration Scale, perceived noise and place attachment, with objective measurements of noise test, saliva cortisol samples, traffic count and weather monitoring. In addition, two scales were developed for perceived noise and place attachment. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the relationship between ambient sound levels and restoration in an urban green area. The study took place in a suburban beach park in Åsgårdstrand, Vestfold. Exclusion criteria were all individuals under the age of 18, and individuals with medical conditions that results in no secrete saliva or produce cortisol. It is an important principle for this study that outdoor areas and urban beach parks are for everyone; therefore, it would be unnatural to exclude someone from the questionnaires on grounds other than that the person cannot stay in the beach park. A total of 136 participants took part of the study, and 28 participants fulfilled the inclusion criteria for saliva cortisol samples and interviews. The study found a connection between perceived noise, recreation, and place attachment. The results indicated that it is also necessary to investigate the connection between noise level and perceived noise, as well as the combination of subjective and objective measurements. In conclusion, to the best of our knowledge, the current paper is the first to test this issue against both subjective and objective data.
