Frivillighetssektorens arbeid med barn, unge og familier i sårbare livssituasjoner

Abstract

Masteroppgaven omhandler frivillighetssektorens arbeid med barn, unge og familier i sårbare livssituasjoner med lavinntekt og innvandrerbakgrunn som fokusområde. Formålet med studien har vært å få økt kunnskap om arbeidet som gjøres med målgruppen.

Oppgavens problemstilling er: Hvilke opplevelser har ansatte i frivillige organisasjoner med arbeidet som retter seg mot barn, unge og familier i sårbare livssituasjoner?

Jeg har formulert to forskningsspørsmål som skal bidra til å løse problemstillingen: «Hva oppleves av de ansatte som velfungerende og utfordrende i arbeidet med sårbare barn, unge og familier?» og «Hvordan tilrettelegger de ansatte for mestring som tilnærming i arbeidet med sårbare barn, unge og familier?»

Gratis lavterskeltilbud som foreldrekurs, familiemiddager og idrettsaktiviteter i regi av frivillige organisasjoner kan bidra til å fremme mestring og inkludering for målgruppene. Jeg har gjennomført fem kvalitative intervjuer med to ledere og tre frivilligkoordinatorer som er ansatt i Home Start, Røde Kors, Frelsesarmeen og et aktivitetshus for ungdom. Den teoretiske referanserammen som oppgaven bygger på er Albert Bandura sin teori om mestringstro, Paulo Freire sin dialogiske handlingsteori og samfunnsarbeid. Jeg har hatt en fenomenologisk tilnærming i undersøkelsen og anvendt tematisk analyse for å analysere mine innsamlede data.

Oppgavens konklusjon viser at ansatte opplever at en kartleggingssamtale i forkant av et samarbeid mellom familiene og de frivillige er viktig for et velfungerende arbeid. Her vil informasjonsgiving om organisasjonens formål gjøre seg gjeldende. Tilrettelegging for at barna, ungdommene og familiene kunne medvirke i tilbud ble fremhevet som viktig for deltakelse. Utfordringer med arbeidet opplevdes av de ansatte som språk- og kulturforskjeller, samt problemer med kommunikasjon og dialog. Forventningsavklaringer ble sett på som en av faktorene for å løse disse utfordringene. Tilrettelegging for mestring innad i tilbud og aktiviteter hadde økt betydning innad i organisasjonene. En viktig tilnærming var å gi veiledning, tilbakemeldinger og oppmuntrende kommentarer på innsatsen som ble gjennomført av deltakerne. Prinsipper fra samfunnsarbeid som gjorde seg gjeldende i organisasjonens arbeid var å løse og forebygge samfunnsmessige problemer, inneha et likeverdig menneskesyn og få til endring i fellesskap.

This master's thesis is about voluntary sectors work with children, youth, and families in vulnerable life situations with a targeted focus on low income and immigrant background. The purpose has been to gain increased knowledge about the work that is conducted with the target group.

The master’s thesis problem statement is: What experiences do employees in voluntary organizations have with the work that targets children, youth and families in vulnerable life situations?

I have formulated two research questions that will contribute to solving this statement: "What do the employees perceive as well-functioning and challenging in their work with vulnerable children, youth and families?" and "How do the employees facilitate mastery as an approach in working with vulnerable children, youth and families?”

Free activities organized by voluntary organizations such as parenting courses, family dinners and sports activities can help to promote mastery and inclusion for the target groups. I have conducted five qualitative interviews with two managers and three volunteer coordinators who are employed by Home Start, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and a youth activity center. My master thesis consists of three theoretical perspectives which are based upon Albert Bandura's theory of self-efficacy, Paulo Freire's dialogue theory, and community work. I have taken a phenomenological approach in my research process and used thematic analysis to further analyze my collected data.

My master’s thesis concludes with the importance of a survey interview before a collaboration takes place between the families and the volunteers. This provides for a well-functioning voluntary environment. Providing information about the organization’s guidelines are also useful to discuss during the interviews. User participation by the target group in activity development were important by the work employees, because it could increase the participation in activities. Employees experiences challenges within language and cultural differences, and communication and dialogue. Clarification of expectations were seen as a problem-solving factor. Facilitation for mastery within activities had increased importance within the employees. Providing guidance, feedback and encouraging comments on the efforts undertaken by the participants were seen as important. Principles from community work that were reflected in the different organizations’ work were solving and preventing social problems, the importance of having an outlook based on equality and to working towards change in unity.
