Skårberg, Odd Sjønne. (2013). Musikalsk skolering for framtiden. Om valgets kvaler i dagens musikkundervisning. Studia Musicologica Norvegica, 39, 93-115.Abstract
The article discusses music history teaching in today's primary and secondary school, as well as in higher education. The current curriculum in Norwegian music educating places few restrictions on what is regarded as significant from the musical past. In that way, the function of music history in education is no longer obvious, but must be discussed in lights of the multifaceted cultural condition in our time. The auteur argues that this can be seen as a symptom of a more fundamental uncertainty concerning the status of music education in today's society. The article exemplifies this by referring to a debate in the higher music education in Norway from 2009, where such issues were raised. Finally, the auteur discuss some historiographical aspects of music history that emphasizes the fact that music always is historical situated, both on a social as well as on an individual level and therefore must be considered as a central topic in todays music education.
