English: This thesis is a qualitative study focusing on the historical development of the Norwegian primary and lower secondary school. The purpose is to identify learning's position in this historical development from around 1152 to the present day, by pointing out which other motivations also have helped to shape the school, and in such a way analyze and discuss them diachronically so the learning's position appears more clearly. With that as a starting point I shall consider the extent to which the school is a place for learning. I have chosen to take advantage of an educational-historical research method with a hermeneutical approach. The historical-chronological review which form the theoretical and empirical basis, is divided into an epochal historical presentation to highlight the qualitatively new in the various epochs, while pointing out the connection with the previous. This forms the basis for the diachronic comparison of the analysis and discussion, which because of the task scope is divided into five central themes in the development of the Norwegian primary and lower secondary school. The theoretical and empirical basis discusses some of the key events and the key features of the historical epochs, and are based on a hermeneutic approach to previous research and historical documents, including curricula, school laws and reforms. In the analysis and discussion, I look at the five subjects Christianity, unity, economy, politics and storage. The analysis shows that these have continually been involved in shaping everyday life in school, and it is therefore evident that the school represents a diversity of communityrelated purposes and has many roles that in a varying degree also have learning as a goal.nb_NO
