Kommunikasjon i band – en undersøkelse av en uformell bandpraksis.

Abstract

Norsk: Denne oppgaven omhandler kommunikasjon i et band som en uformell lærings- og musiseringspraksis. Den undersøker hvilke former for kommunikasjon som oppstår i et band, i en samspillsituasjon. Bandet i undersøkelsen er et friimproviserende jazzband, og empirien er hentet fra video-opptak fra et øvingsstrekk på en bandøving, i tillegg til intervjuer med hvert av bandmedlemmene. Jeg er også interessert i å se på hva musikalsk opplæring og bakgrunn kan ha å si for kommunikasjonen. Med utgangspunkt i dette har oppgaven fått følgende problemstilling: Hvilke former for kommunikasjon kan man finne i en jazztrio – verbalt, kroppslig og musikalsk – og hvilken betydning ser medlemmenes musikalske bakgrunn og opplæring ut til å ha for kommunikasjonen? Teorier om formell og uformell musikklæring og musikalsk kommunikasjon danner det teoretiske bakteppet, før jeg går inn på og begrunner min metode. Metoden er kvalitativ, har en fenomenologisk tilnærming og består av videoobservasjon og semistrukturerte intervjuer. I resultatdelen vises funn fra videoopptak og intervjuer fra undersøkelsen fram og settes i lys av teoriene, før jeg i diskusjonsdelen kobler dette opp mot problemstillingen min. Dataene fra undersøkelsen viser at både kroppslige, verbale og musikalske former for kommunikasjon oppstår i samspillet hos bandmedlemmene. Undersøkelsen viser også at musikalsk opplæring og bakgrunn, både formell og uformell, kan ha noe å si for kommunikasjonen i en uformell bandpraksis.

English: This thesis deals with the communication in a band as an informal learning- and music-making practice. It examines the forms of communication that occurs in a band, in an interaction situation. The band in the survey is a free-improvised jazz band, and the empirical data are taken from a video recording of a rehearsal stretch during band rehearsal, as well as interviews with each band member. I'm also interested to see what musical training and background can have on communication. Based on this, the task has been given the following research question: What forms of communication can be found in a jazz trio - verbally, physically and musically – and which importance does the members musical background and training seem to have for communication? Theories of formal and informal music learning and musical communication form the theoretical backdrop, before I enter into, and validate my method. The method is qualitative, has a phenomenological approach and consists of video observation and semi-structured interviews. In the results section I will take a look at findings from the video footage and the interviews surveys, in light of theory, before I connect this to the research question in the discussion. The data from the survey show that both physical, verbal and musical forms of communication occur in the interaction between the band members. The survey also shows that musical training and background, both formal and informal, may have significance for the communication in an informal band practice.
