Sang, fellesskap og skoleidentitet - i en norsk folkehøgskole.

Abstract

Norsk: Hvordan sang og musikk kan skape fellesskap og skoleidentitet i folkehøgskolen er temaet for denne avhandlingen. Avhandlingen har to forskningsspørsmål. Disse er: Hvordan bruker en spesifikk folkehøgskole sang og musikk for å legge til rette for og skape et godt fellesskap? På hvilke måter skapes en folkehøgskoleidentitet ved hjelp av sang og musikk i folkehøgskolen? Folkehøgskolen er et annerledes skoleår der elevene også bor ved skolen. Det er viktig at skolen legger til rette for og skaper et godt fellesskap, slik at elevene kan føle tilhørighet og samhørighet. Gjennom sangen og musikken kan også folkehøgskolen skape sin egen identitet. Forskningsspørsmålene belyses gjennom analyser av empiri samlet inn gjennom et halvt år. Studien er designet som en case-studie av en bestemt folkehøgskole, der timeplanfestede aktiviteter ble observert. Dette inkluderte morgensamlinger, skolekor, introduksjonsukene og lignende aktiviteter. En gruppe elever og en gruppe lærere ble intervjuet om hvordan de opplever skolen bruker sang og musikk i dette arbeidet. Analysene er forankret i teori om og tidligere forskning på musikk, identitet og fellesskap. Funnene i studien indikerer at folkehøgskolen bruker sang og musikk til å presentere seg selv musikalsk, til å utføre hverdags- og overgangsritualer, til å konstruere et uformelt arbeidsmiljø, til å forme et fellesskap av historier og minner, og til å organisere elevene i tid og rom. I tillegg utgjør musikkpraksisene ved folkehøgskolen en variert arena for musikalsk danning, læring og gruppetilhørighet. Folkehøgskolens omfattende bruk av sang og musikk i folkehøgskolehverdagen skaper felleskap og skoleidentitet.

English: This thesis is called Song, community, and school identity- in a Norwegian folk high school. How song and music can create community and school identity is the theme for this thesis. The thesis has two research questions. These are: How does a specific folk high school use song and music to facilitate and create a good community? In what ways is a folk high school identity being created with the help of song and music in the folk high school? The folk high school is a different type of school year where the students also lives at the school. It is important that the school facilitate and create a good community so that the student can feel affiliation and togetherness. The folk high school can create their own identity through song and music. Through analysis of the empiricism these research questions are clarified. The thesis is designed as a case study of a specific folk high school, where all musical activities that the whole school must participate in, is observed. This includes morning gatherings, the school choir, the introduction week, and other common activities. A group of students and a group of teachers were interviewed about how they experience the schools use of song and music in this work. The analysis is rooted in the theory and previous research about music, identity, and community. The findings in this study indicates the folk high school use song and music to present itself musically, to preform everyday rituals and rites of passage, to construct an unformal work environment, to form a community of history and memories, and to organize the students in time and place. In addition, these musical practices at the folk high school consist of a varied area for musical education, learning and group affiliation. Community and school identity is created through the folk high schools extensive use of song and music in their everyday life.
