Ironi og posisjoner i Kjell Askildsens «Thomas F’s siste nedtegnelser til almenheten».

Abstract

Norsk: Avhandlingen gir en fortolkning av Kjell Askildsens «Thomas F’s siste nedtegnelser til almenheten». Det legges opp til en pragmatisk holdning der terminologi fra ulike teoretiske retninger kan tjene til å belyse litteraturen. Utgangspunktet er at den litterære teksten legger rammene for lesningen. Sjangermessig blir tekstene om Thomas F tolket som en novellesyklus. De er knyttet sammen motivmessig og tematisk, der jeg-fortelleren Thomas ser tilbake på en rekke møter med ulike personer. Det litterære språket i novellesyklusen gjør det utfordrende å skape seg klare oppfatninger om hovedpersonen. Oppgaven argumenterer for at dette henger sammen med hvordan ironi er tilstede i tekstene. Det er en annen form for ironi enn den man finner innen klassisk retorikk. Den ser ut til å forstyrre hvordan vi skal oppfatte Thomas og møtene han beskriver som forteller. Analysen følger derfor en ironiforståelse fra Paul de Man, som er opptatt av avbrytelser i meningsdannelse. Fortolkningen i denne oppgaven er pluralistisk i sin befatning med teori. Den styrer unna en dekonstruktiv analysestrategi, og benytter de Mans tilnærming til ironi i samspill med annen teori. Den søker å peke på forstyrrelser, paradokser og selvmotsigelser framfor en absolutt undergraving av mening. Samtidig vil oppgavens pragmatiske holdning åpne for ytterligere innfallsvinkler. Det gjelder fokus på kroppslig oppfatningsevne og vandring som viktige elementer i den litterære handlingen. Dette blir omtalt både som tematikk i handlingen og i et metaperspektiv på litteraturen. Thomas F’s bevissthet til egen kroppslige sansning, samt hans evne og muligheter til å gå, knyttes til skriving. Det skaper en bevegelse framover der den tenkte forfatteren Thomas F er i stand til å gjøre sine nedtegnelser. Han organiserer sine erfaringer inn i en veksling mellom seg selv i tilbakeblikk, og seg selv i en skrivingens nåtid. Oppgaven bygger videre på noe tidligere resepsjon når det gjelder hvordan oppfatninger om rasjonalitet og irrasjonalitet blir tematisert i novellesyklusen. I denne avhandlingen inngår slike spørsmål i en større diskusjon om normer og verdier. Holdninger hos Thomas F betraktes som en del av posisjoneringen han foretar seg i teksten. Hans posisjoner er på ulike nivåer, som forteller av dialogene og hvordan han tar del i handlingen i møte med personene. Ironi og posisjoner er analytiske nedslagspunkt som er de mest sentrale i fortolkningen. I tillegg kommer de andre fokusområdene tid og rom, kropp og vandring. Analysen viser at observasjoner innen de ulike feltene kan sees i sammenheng, og at de bidrar til å støtte opp rundt ironiforståelsen i Askildsens novellesyklus om Thomas F.

English: This thesis provides an interpretation of Kjell Askildsen’s “Thomas F's siste nedtegnelser til almenheten” [“Thomas F's Last Notes to The Public”]. It all adds up to a pragmatic attitude, in which terminology from various theoretical approaches can serve to illuminate the literature. The principle is that the literary text provides the framework for reading. In terms of genre, the texts of Thomas F is interpreted as a short story cycle. They are linked together in terms of literary motives and themes. The first person narrator Thomas looks back at a series of meetings with various people. The literary language of the short story cycle makes it challenging to carve out clear perceptions of the protagonist. This is related to the irony present in the texts and will be emphasized by the thesis. It is another kind of irony than what can be found in classical rhetoric. It seems to interfere with how we perceive Thomas and the meetings he describes as a narrator. The analysis will show understanding of Paul de Man, that focuses on interruptions. The interpretation of this thesis is pluralistic in its dealings with the theory. It utilizes de Mans approach to irony, combined with other theories, rather than employing deconstruction as a strategy of analysis. It pursues to point to disturbances, paradoxes and contradictions rather than an absolute subversion of meaning. Furthermore, the pragmatic approach in this thesis will open to further approaches as well. It applies to focus on bodily perception and migration as important elements in the literary action. This is referred to as both themes in action and in a meta perspective on literature. Thomas F's awareness of his own bodily sensations, as well as his ability and opportunities to walk, is closely related to writing. It creates a forward movement in which the imaginary author Thomas F is able to make his writings. He organizes his experiences into an exchange between himself in retrospect, and himself in a present act of writing. The analysis builds on some previous reception, in terms of how perceptions of rationality and irrationality are articulated in the short story cycle. In this thesis such issues are included in a broader discussion about norms and values. Attitudes of Thomas F are considered part of the positioning he does in the text. His positions are on different levels, as a narrator of the dialogues and how he takes part in the action with other people. Irony and positions are the analytic aspects that are most important in the interpretation. In addition, the other focus areas are time and space, body and the activity “to walk”. The analysis shows that observations in the different fields can be seen in context, and that they will contribute to the understanding of irony in Askildsen’s short story cycle about Thomas F.
