English: In this thesis I do a reading of significant texts linked to two different areas of research, one concerning musical existential experience, the other concerning musical identity. My goal is to study these phenomena not as separate fields, but as phenomena that are related to each other on profound levels. “Musical existential experience” is a relatively new concept within the discipline of music didactics, but it has come to be explored with substantial interest by an increasing number of scholars since it was introduced in the new national curriculum for music education in Norway in 2006. Roles that music play in the construction of identity has evolved as a prominent field of research for several decades now both within the larger field of musicology and more specifically within music didactics. The present thesis offers what we may label a form of exploratory research where I seek to investigate whether the two phenomena in question can be seen to be related on a deeper level and affect each other. This thesis is intended as a contribution to further research with the aim of creating greater didactic understanding of the phenomena, and to open up to a greater awareness for “musical existential experience” as a new didactic category.nb_NO
