Abstract: This thesis has its basis in the child welfare project, The New Child Welfare Service (Det Nye Barnevernet, DNBV), which was carried out from 2007 to 2011. One of the main findings of DNBV is that the most vulnerable families in contact with the Child Welfare Service are also those receiving the least help for improving the functioning of the family. The purpose of this thesis is to expand the understanding of this problem by examining vulnerable families with experiences relating to the assistance they receive from and the interactions they have with the Child Welfare Service. This thesis contributes new knowledge that complements the existing research on marginalised families with children and the assistance they receive, and provides new perspectives on the barriers and opportunities situated in the interaction between vulnerable families with children and the Child Welfare Service. This thesis is a qualitative study that has employed narrative methods. The empirical data consists of 11 life-history interviews. This thesis’s sample comprises 10 mothers and one father, all of whom are single parents in vulnerable families with long-term contact with the Child Welfare Service. The theme of the interviews has been the parents’ experiences with help from the Child Welfare Service during their own childhoods, and the parents’ experiences as recipients of assistance from the Child Welfare Services for their own children. The thesis data is analysed using two different narrative methods: a narrative analysis focusing on temporality and turning points in the parents’ stories, and a voice-centred analysis focusing on the parents’ subjective experiences and the emotional aspects of their stories. The data has been analysed with the theories of Honneth and Fraser, and marginalisation is used as a theoretical concept. The results of the analyses show that vulnerable families with long-term contact with the Child Welfare Service are marginalised along two dimensions: a material dimension and a symbolic dimension. In addition, the results show that the two dimensions appear to be interwoven and to have a cumulative effect on the most marginalised families. This thesis reveals new knowledge about how the problem of marginalisation at the intersection of professional and value-based foundations of child welfare produces barriers in the interaction between vulnerable families and the Child Welfare Service. These barriers have their basis in the emotional and disrespectful experiences of the parents, and a lack of knowledge about marginalisation processes with the Child Welfare Services. Increased participation in one’s own child welfare case, on the other hand, has a positive effect on the parents’ interaction with the Child Welfare Services.en_US
