As a journalist, poet, playwright and Bible translator, the Norwegian theologian Ivar Mortensson-Egnund (1857–1934) was an important figure in the Norwegian nynorsk language movement. Mortensson translated about a third of the Old Testament from Hebrew into nynorsk, but most of this work remained unpublished and is probably lost. The article documents the extent of his Bible translations and discusses his translation practice. Mortensson is seen as a proponent of a romantic hermeneutics in the tradition of Schleiermacher. Translations of Bible passages are also important elements in his literary works, both in an early “anarchist” period and in a later “mystical” period.
