Musikk og dannelse i folkehøyskolen

Abstract

Master i kultur- og musikkdidaktikk ved høyskolen i innlandet 2024. Denne masteroppgaven utforsker forholdet mellom musikk og dannelse på folkehøyskole gjennom problemstillingen: «Hvilke betydninger har musikk for dannelse på folkehøyskole?». Folkehøyskoler har som formål å fremme allmenndannelse og folkeopplysning. Oppgaven ser på utviklingen av dannelsesbegrepet fra antikkens paideia frem til i dag. Bruken av sang og musikk i folkehøyskolen er en del av folkehøyskolens historie, og hvilke betydninger dette har for dannelse blir utforsket gjennom 2 kvalitative intervjuer med én tidligere elev, og én lærer ved folkehøyskole. Studien søker å komme nærmere innpå refleksjoner, erfaringer og opplevelser av musikk, og dens betydninger på folkehøyskole. Musikkfagets begrunnelse blir utforsket gjennom diskurser som, musikk som danningsmiddel, musikk som kunnskap, musikk som kulturarv og identitet, musikk som det sosiale og musikk som selvuttrykk. Det drøftes om musikk er unikt som aktivitet i det å oppnå dannelse gjennom sosiale interaksjoner på folkehøyskoler, sammenlignet med andre aktiviteter og fag, hvor slike problemstillinger tar både individet og samfunnet i betraktning. Resultatene av data innsamlet i denne oppgaven peker mot at musikk kan ha en positiv påvirkning av felleskapsbygging og samhold på folkehøyskolen.

Master of didactics of culture and language at inland Norway university of applied sciences 2024. This master thesis explores what role music plays in the formation of students at Norwegian folk high schools, through the research question: What types of values does music have for the formation of students at Norwegian folk high schools? Folk high schools have as a purpose to help create educated young adults through formation and enlightenment. The use of song and music in folk high schools is widely known as part of the school’s tradition, and what meaning this have for the formation process of students is explored through a qualitative study of one teacher, and one former student. The thesis seeks to explore the experiences and reflections around the use of music as a means for formation at the school. The justification of the subject music is discussed through the discourses, music as means for formation, music as a means for knowledge, music as a means for cultural heritage, music as a means for development of identity, music as a means for social interactions and music as a means for self-expression. It is discussed whether there is anything unique about music as a tool for development and formation of social interactions, compared to other social activities and subjects. The results of data collected in this thesis points towards the use of music having a positive impact on community building and unity within folk high schools.
