Norge.
English: Horse-based tourism is an important and increasing sector of the tourism industry, and for
several countries this product is a crucial part of their tourism. Examples of activities related
to horse-based tourism are horse-back riding, sleigh rides, horse shows, and competitions.
Horse-based industry is also increasing within several different areas in Norway. More and
more people use the horse as a means to recreation, and the interest for participating in horse
related activities in connection with vacations are increasing. Meanwhile, the Norwegian
horse-based companies struggle to promote themselves in the tourist markets, and that
includes even the most professional companies.
In this study I have attempted to obtain information regarding the international market for
horse-based tourism. Important questions I have tried to an answer is how the international
market views Norway as a horse-based vacation destination, which desires and demands the
international customers have to the product they are buying, and if companies within the
Norwegian mountain region and surrounding areas offers these products. To obtain
information I have sent out questionnaires to selected travel agencies specialized on horsebased
vacations, and by the use of internet and interviews.
My results indicate that the horse-culture in Norway is not well known, and that few
companies have been able to penetrate the international market. At the same time, the results
show that Norway has the potential to develop successful and competitive products, because
of the nature, culture, and Norwegian horse-breeds, but that many companies are still not
ready for the international market. This also applies for the companies within the mountain
region and surrounding areas.
