Abstract
Norsk: Denne rapporten inneholder to lengre essays om presten Abraham Pihl

slag.

Pihl fungerte i flere

gjenoppbygd i 1804-10.

hagebruker.

English: This report contains two essays about the priest Abraham Pihl (1756–

1821). Pihl was priest in the municipality of Vang in Hedmarken from 1789 to his

death in 1821. He is however, better known for what he did besides his service as a

priest. He was an astronomer and in 1805 wrote an article about how to use a

chronometer to determine the longitude of a place. He also made meteorological

observations for many years. In addition to this Pihl made clocks of different kinds. He

made chronometers, he made big clocks on belfries, and floor clocks and clocks for

the mantel piece. Pihl also made lenses, and his own field glasses and telescopes, as

well as musical instruments, among other things an organ. Pihl worked as an architect

on several occasions. For example he designed Vang church which burned down and

was rebuilt between 1804 and 1810. At the end of his life he was especially interested

in agriculture and the development of agricultural equipment. He built among other

things Hedmarken’s first threshing machine, which was completed in 1805, and he

made a chopping machine for straw. He introduced the plough as a replacement for the

ridging plough, and he made a machine to extract oil from poppy seeds. In addition to

this he built a brickworks, a mill and a spinning mill. He also introduced peat cutting

and the sowing of autumn wheat. He was an enthusiastic gardener.
