English: This evaluation study is part of a four-year research collaboration between Hedmark College, Department of Nursing Education and an acute ward at Sanderud psychiatric hospital (‘Project Teaching Ward’). The aim of this descriptive study was, by means of a semi-structured questionnaire, to investigate what experiences the staff have had through three years of participation in co-operative inquiry related to clinical problems, and what impacts the project has had on their experience of competence in their daily work with the patients. 16 mental health professionals answered the questionnaire (responserate 59%). The material was analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed that various actions (i.a., dialogue teaching, development of ward objectives and ideology, development of knowledge through observations, focus groups and implementations of results from reports) have contributed to changes – partly in the organisation of services, partly in attitudes and actions both on individual as well as on collective level. There are two main themes in the process of change in the staffs’ experience of competence, namely 1) changes in attitudes in relation to patients, colleagues and to themselves, and 2) insight and understanding as it is demonstrated by increased theoretical understanding on collective as well as on individual level – and also a growth in practical kowledge of how knowledge have made them more equiped to comprehend and meet the patients on a relational level. The results from this evaluation indicates that participatory inquiry, by addressing everyday problems on the ward, has a potential for ‘closing the gap’ between science and practice. ‘Project Teaching Ward’ serves as an illustration of how futhering of competence and development of knowledge within acute psychiatric care could (easily) be applied to other areas of professional practice.
