English: This thesis views North Norwegian folk music culture, and looks at the characteristics today and continuation of traditions. My research question was: How do North Norwegian folk music culture continue through generations, and what are the characteristics of this tradition today? I have tried to find answers to this by interviewing several North Norwegian artists, amongst them Halvdan Sivertsen and Ragnar Olsen. In addition to this I have analyzed the lyrics of folk music songs from 1970 and up until today. The objective of this thesis is to offer significant information concerning this music culture to those who have an interest in reading about it. By relying on theory from, amongst others, Even Ruud, Petter Dyndahl and Göran Folkestad, in addition to folk music collections made by Nordnorsk Viseforum and Jack Berntsen, I have been able to get an impression of how the North Norwegian culture has been able to stay alive. In this thesis, I will present my informants, as well as present the history of the North Norwegian folk music culture. The analysis of the interviews will take a closer look at my informant’s musical background as well as their thoughts on the characteristics of the concept North Norwegian folk music culture. The textual analysis will offer a look on North Norwegian folk music lyrics from 1970 and up until today. My discussion is based on the different analyses and theory, and will, amongst other things, take a closer look on the political aspects of North Norwegian folk music culture. The textual content of North Norwegian folk music culture is discussed in light of Liv Kreken’s research on published folk music newspapers from the 1970s and up until today. A relatively self-reliant textual based song, which works on an acoustic level, but also withstands the weight of more musical elements. After working on this thesis, this is how I would characterize todays North Norwegian folk music. How these traditions are continued, and the importance of this, is also mentioned in the closing part of my thesis.nb_NO
