Business development work is absolutely necessary to meet the ever-changing needs of the market. It takes time and resources to acquire the necessary market insights needed to create value propositions that are perceived as relevant by a customer and other collaborators. Much of the existing research focuses on internal conditions that are needed to enable the company to innovate, explore new opportunities, or to exploit the existing opportunities the company has at its disposal. This study has been based on the recognition that market insight is best acquired in collaboration with those who will actually make use of the value proposition the company offers in the form of a product and/or service (or combination thereof). This insight and collaboration can also take place with other relevant partners who are interested in helping to create value propositions for an end customer. Based on this recognition, the company needs to have an understanding of how to collaborate with others, as well as how to take the lead in meeting the external partner in the most appropriate way so that the necessary insight can be acquired. In this context, O´Reilly and Tushman (2011) highlight research that emphasizes various structural and cultural guidelines for whether the company wishes to conduct exploratory and / or exploitative development work in practice. The study will therefore look at the interaction between the company's purpose for development work, what methods of collaboration and information gathering it uses, and what kind of approach the company has to cooperation. Hence the following problem: How is a company's ability to achieve its purpose in development work affected by the various methods of collaboration it chooses and its approach to collaborative relationships? The research design and method used for the study is explorative, abductive, and qualitative. The study is based on two case companies that have a largely different approach to the study's central themes. In order to gain insight into the two case companies, mainly semi-structured interviews are used, in order to elicit the subjective opinion of the informants and their own interpretation of reality. The results show that companies with different purposes in the development work – whether they mainly explore or exploit – have different approaches to cooperation in the form of the roles they take on above their partners. Both companies work extensively with and recognize the importance of the customer as the source of insight for development work. From this, they engage in both co-production and co-creation in close relationships with the customer and other relevant partners. What the study shows is that based on what the company's purpose for development work is, guidelines are laid for what approach they have to the collaboration. The study has revealed that there are structural and cultural guides to the approach adopted by Heide and Wathne's (2006) relational management mechanisms above the external party that could influence the company's development work. The steering mechanisms may work positively or negatively depending on the purpose of the development work and on the approach the partner has himself. In this way, cooperation with others can be made more efficient by adopting a correct approach above the desired partner based on the purpose of the development work. If the company aims to explore new knowledge in order to create new opportunities, it will be beneficial to have a collaborative approach that is characterized and favors management mechanisms such as selection and socialization. If, on the other hand, the company aims to exploit existing knowledge and opportunities then it will be more favorable to have a collaborative approach that is characterized by and favors management mechanisms such as incentive- and monitoring systems. With this, the study has responded to O'Reilly and Tushman's (2011) call and shown that different purposes of development work require different structures and cultures, and how this can be reflected in a practical setting. This empirical study was carried out in a context characterized by a high rate of change, as well as in a B2B context where the cases mainly cooperate with other companys. The results will nevertheless have transfer value for other players outside the given environment. The findings are relevant for companies that do development work regardless of whether they are currently doing this in collaboration with others or not. For those who do not develop the company in collaboration with others, this study may seem convincing that such cooperation could be beneficial and, in this way, could initiate cooperation with an appropriate approach right from the start. For those companies that are already doing development work in collaboration with others, this study could help them gain a proven relationship with their own approach to others, possibly changing them to what is more appropriate.en_US
