Abstract
Norsk:

English:

In this Bachelor thesis, I have tried to shed some light on whether or not the Music subject in Norwegian lower secondary schools influence the development of the pupils’ identities. Through my work, I have interviewed several pupils of lower secondary school and students from the University College of Hedmark, and have since attempted to recount their answers with relevant pedagogical theories.

My most relevant findings center around the pupils’ lacking ability to observe themselves objectively, and the work has resulted in the creation of my own term; ’healthy uncertainty’. This term describes how the creation of our identity happens within a social setting, and how uncertainty is healthy for us, because we adapt to our social relations and surroundings without changing identity. In Norwegian schools, the Music subject might challenge this healthy uncertainty, and the pupils can therefore benefit from this experience as they later in life come across perspectives of assessment.
