Bildeboka som døråpner til emosjonelt utfordrende tema: Fjerdeklassingers refleksjoner rundt bildeboka Dagen av Gro Dahle og Kaia Dahle Nyhus

Abstract

Min masteroppgave ser på småskoleelevers refleksjoner og tolkninger rundt bildeboka Dagen, skrevet av Gro Dahle og illustrert av Kaia Dahle Nyhus. Dagen har potensial til å treffe både barn og voksne med sin alvorlige tematikk. Bildeboka er sannsynligvis et medium som barn i skolen allerede har møtt på, og det er derfor interessant å se hvilke refleksjoner de gjør seg ved å dykke enda dypere i bildeboka Dagens tematikk og handling.

For å skape en egen tolkning av boka før datainnsamlingen, utarbeidet jeg en egen bildebokanalyse av Dagen. Jeg utarbeidet denne for å selv ha et utgangspunkt og god kjennskap til boka før jeg samlet inn data. Jeg brukte litterære samtaler for å skape data, og innhentet data ved bruk av deltakende observasjon og lydopptak. Jeg utførte fire litterære samtaler med 19 fjerdeklassinger. De litterære samtalene ble gjort i grupper med 4-6 elever der jeg var samtalestyrer. Jeg leste bildeboka høyt for elevene og stilte åpne spørsmål med rom for refleksjon. Under samtalene fikk elevene mulighet til å ytre sine meninger og tolkninger, noe de aller fleste benyttet seg av. Datamaterialet fra de litterære samtalene besto av lydklipp som jeg transkriberte, og transkripsjonene fra samtalene har vært mitt utgangspunkt for funnene mine.

Elevene som deltok i de litterære samtalene, viste stort engasjement og god evne til refleksjon. Bildene gjorde dem spesielt nysgjerrige og elevenes tolkninger baserer seg i stor grad på de visuelle aspektene ved boka. Studien viser hvordan bildeboka fungerer som døråpner til emosjonelt utfordrende tema, med funnene som ble gjort i samtalene med fjerdeklassingene som grunnlag. Min studie viser bildebokas potensial for empatiutvikling både på grunn av estetisk lesemåte, innlevelse og gjenkjennelse i personene, og bildebokas tematikk.

My master’s thesis studies children’s reflections and interpretations of the picture book Dagen, written by Gro Dahle and illustrated by Kaia Dahle Nyhus. This picture book has potential to appeal to both children and adults due to its topic. Given that the picture book is a medium that children in school are likely to have already encountered, I found it interesting to study the reflections they make by delving deeper into the book’s themes and plot.

Before collecting data, I made my own analysis of Dagen as a base to develop my own understanding of the book. This analysis was meant to provide an understanding of the book before I started collecting my data. I used literary conversations as a method to collect data and gathered the information through participatory observation and audio recordings. I did four conversations with 19 fourth graders in groups of 4-6 pupils. I read the picture book out loud for the pupils, and asked questions that allowed them to express their opinions and interpretations as we progressed through the book. The data from the literary conversations consisted of audio clips which I transcribed, and the transcriptions formed the basis of my findings.

The pupils who participated in the conversations showed engagement and ability to reflect. The pictures made them particularly curious, and the pupils’ interpretations was based on the visual aspects of the book most of the time. My study shows how the picture books works as an opening to emotionally challenging topics, with findings from the conversations as a foundation. My thesis shows Dagen and the picture book in general’s potential for development of empathy, due to aesthetic way of reading, immersion in the text, recognition in characters, and the topics of the picture book.
